Literary Lessons from the Lord of the Rings is a full English credit for the high school level. In addition to The Lord of the Rings, students learn about the ancient epics, Beowulf, the Arthurian stories, over 120 literary terms and much more. Also includes over 600 vocabulary words, a wide range of suggested writing assignments, and all tests and quizzes. Designed as a self-directed study for students in grades 7-12 but great for groups as well! Includes full-color illustrations by famed Tolkien artist John Howe, conceptual artist for the films.
NOTE from BRAIN-athon Emporium owner, Cindy Powers: I have used this entire series with 3 of my children. We absolutely LOVED it! We learned SO much about Tolkien, CS Lewis, Shakespeare, Beowulf, literary devices, vocabulary - I could go on and on! Amelia has done a wonderful job of compiling a comprehensive review of every aspect of LOTR.
While this is really a highschool course, my 10year old son had his own student book and did all of the pages. The only thing I let slide for him was some of the more intensive writing assignments; although, whenever Amelia suggested they write a "missing chapter" or tell what would have transpired if something else had happened in the story (for example, what if Merry and Pippin had gone back to warn the Shirefolk instead of remaining with Treebeard and the other Ents), he jumped at the chance! They also learned a lot about the liberties Hollywood takes with a literary work, as we discovered shortcuts and character substitutions the writers had made in the screenplay version.
This series comes with my HIGHEST recommendations! We looked forward to it EVERY day!...Cindy °Ü°
